At Save Our Buffalo Churches, we are helping to share information with our diocese on all of our rights as laity, clergy and parishes under Canon law.
Closures/Mergers are permitted for ‘grave cause’ only.
'Grave cause' does NOT include priest shortages, diocese financial issues, nor demographic changes which are temporary circumstances and can change. Canon Law allows for an appeal of a bishop’s decision.
A Church cannot be closed when you have the faithful willing to fund a church, repair a church, and use a church.
Once a church building is consecrated, the intent is for it to go 'in perpetuity' and not be deconsecrated 'willy nilly'.
"Closures and mergers are a blunt instrument. This endangers the faith life of these people and has caused harm... Forty percent of people whose parishes have been merged leave the Catholic church. There's something wrong. " (now deceased canon lawyer Sr. Kate Kuentzler)
Each parish needs help. We can put you in contact with the main person coordinating your parish's challenge. We can also use your help at our core level. Contact us for more information.
